Asian elephant calf gets her first bath at Saint Louis Zoo

The Saint Louis Zoo is proud to announce the birth of an Asian elephant on Friday, April 26, 2013 at 10:57 p.m. Ellie, the Zoo’s 42-year-old Asian elephant, gave birth to a baby girl. She weighed 251 pounds and stands 38 inches tall.

On Sunday, she received her first bath. Listen to her roar! This is the way elephant calves call to their mothers, and Ellie comes right over to her newborn.

Mother and baby are not yet on public display, and a debut date has not been set. The public may help name the baby by voting for their favorite name.

Visit http://www.stlzoo.org/babyelephant for more information on the baby and the naming poll.
